Magnetic toy cars buying guide

Lots of fun playsets. But what do you pay attention to when buying a magnetic toy car?

Magnet

The magnets must be strong enough to stick properly. Especially with magnetic ones cars is this even more important than with magnet tiles (the best rated here).

Your child also wants to be able to play with it. Cars can be driven wildly, so they need to hold on too.

Some brands use neodymium magnets. These are the strongest available while still being able to remain small enough to fit into even small blocks.

Other magnets often do less well, but the placement and combination of magnets is also important.

Age

The recommended age is indicated on the box. This is not always the age for which children the toy is the most fun.

Sometimes it even says 3-99, what do you do with that? Does a teenager still enjoy playing with it?

I have looked at all the sets in this article and put the most appropriate age.

Replayability

How soon will they be done with it? You don't want the toy sitting in the corner when you just bought it new last week.

These types of toys include:

  1. you can build with it
  2. can it drive well

A high score on both fronts is perfect, but a high score on one of the two points can also lead to great replayability.

The Blockaroo car, for example, cannot drive like the best, but it is a very nice set to build with.

The Tegu Roadster doesn't take much to build, but it's sturdy and rides great.

Also pay attention to the extensions that are possible for it. Magformers, Tegu, and Blockaroo all have great add-ons that fit these car sets as well.

Sustainability

How long will the toy last? Cheap plastic is not that expensive, but you probably won't be able to give it to the next little brother or sister.

Wood is very sturdy and good toys like Tegu will last for generations. But good plastic toys can also last a long time.

Just think of Duplo, which everyone still has at home from the past.

  • Nice set with police and crook
  • Great replayability by combining construction and pretend play

  • For smaller children, the car can be difficult to play with

Vrrrroem! Are you in time to save the day ?! With this Magformers set you get all the tools you need to build police vehicles and a real desk.

A very nice set in itself that is both educational and fun to play with, and also a nice addition to the basic Magformers set.

Suitable for children between 3 and 12 years old, but fun between 4 and 8 years old.

It becomes especially fun when you have more Magformers tiles. This way you can make more combinations and expand the police station and car.

Then it's basically a set that gives the Magformers wheels, and some building accessories.

The wheels are sturdy and most resemble Monster truck wheels. The best part is that you can click them together, but also place them a little further apart for a larger car using more tiles.

Driving the car is quite difficult because the tiles are quite loose, especially if you build a larger one.

It is therefore more of a building set than a magnetic toy car alone, such as the Tegu Roadster.

  • Sustainable wooden toys
  • Car drives really well too

  • Very expensive

Tegu is a toy brand that makes everything from wood. Beautiful and sturdy wood.

It's durable and made in Honduras in a responsible manner, that's playing good.

It also makes the set a bit more expensive, but playing with wood gives your child much more in return than plastic toys.

The set is also just very well put together. The magnets click well and stay in place, even during heavy driving.

And that's what you ultimately want from a toy car.

This set offers less building options than the Magformers police set. But you can also supplement this with other sets from Tegu.

They all fit together. Here you get at least 12 building pieces.

Best for
  • Good strong magnets
  • Fits on other Smartmax sets
Less good
  • Very cheap wheels

This play set is for the youngest children. It says 1 to 5 on the box, but it's best for kids a little under 1 to about 2 years old, maybe up to 3 years old.

If you already have a toddler, you better choose the Blockaroo Roadster.

They are car fronts and backs with a magnetic bar in the middle. This allows you to mix and match all colors.

There are not really many combinations possible, but for really young children, for example, it is fun to find the right colors together again and again.

The rods are the same as other Smartmax products so you can also use them with the rods and balls. This way you already have a basis for later magnet toys.

The cars are ok, but the wheels are kind of cheap plastic. They don't really drive great.

As a result, children of 3 to 4 years old will not play with it much anymore, I think. But then it is nice to combine them with other sets.

Best for
  • Nice building blocks and a car
  • Can bathe and shower
Less good
  • Wheels are not very good

The Blockaroo Roadster is a great fun set for toddlers. They can actually start building something with this.

The box says from 3 years old, but a 2-year-old can also appreciate it. In any case, all preschool children can use it.

There are 13 parts, and it is foam that makes the blocks. Nice and soft and good for sensory stimulation.

They can therefore also take a bath and shower, which is definitely worth trying (they can also be put in the dishwasher afterwards).

As with the Smartmax vehicles, the wheels here are not great either. It's more about building and being able to drive it is a bonus.

13 blocks is not very much, but they also fit on other Blockaroo sets.

  • A lot of cars in a set
  • Wheels drive well
Less good
  • Feels cheap
  • Not very educational

There are a lot of parts to combine so that makes it a lot of fun. This way you can sort by color, or make a nice and crazy combination.

This is the kind of toy that children like to play with, but I, as a parent, find less so.

It feels a bit cheap and it's really just cars.

Although they have stated on the website that it is educational and encourages fine motor skills and thinking, that is not really what is happening with the toy.

At least, every toy is essentially good for fine motor skills.

There are indeed 21 parts, but the combinations are somewhat limited. Many parts are a front or back and only a few center pieces.

It is a set where they have a lot of fun playing and the cars also drive quite well.

Conclusion

Magnet toys are great fun. Add a few wheels and you have endless fun.

I hope this list of the best magnetic toy cars has given you some ideas for your next playset.
