Kinetic sand is a great way to get the benefits of sand play while avoiding a lot of the downsides.
Like that otherwise it becomes a big sand gang in the house.
In many ways kinetic sand is also better than Play Doh clay to play with, but there are still some drawbacks to playing with this type of sand.
In this article I will discuss mixing kinetic sand so that you know exactly what to do and what not to do.

What we discuss in this comprehensive post:
Can you separate colored kinetic sand after they are mixed?
No, kinetic sands of different colors cannot possibly be separated back into individual colors after you have mixed them. It is therefore wise not to use the colors together, although this is sometimes a bit difficult with smaller children.
It's actually just like with clay, it's best in the beginning when all the colors are still perfectly separated from each other, but if they play with it by making a green house with a red roof, for example, it will mix a bit.
The colors in kinetic sand mix a little faster than will happen with clay, but the advantage over clay is that you can play with it endlessly without it drying out.
Provided you only mix colors of the same brand, below I will tell you more about mixing this type of sand.
Can you mix kinetic sand with regular sand?
I see no reason why you should not mix it with normal sand, it just loses its kinetic sand qualities because you add it to normal play sand. So it is a bit of a waste of money from the expensive kinetic sand that sticks together so nicely.
Again, it's impossible to separate the kinetic sand from regular sand again, so keep the sandbox sand outside and the kinetic sand inside, and you'll be fine.
Can you mix kinetic sand from different brands?
Kinetic sand from different brands you cannot mix. Although it is all kinetic sand, each brand has its own composition and way of making the sand stick together. Mixing one species with another causes it to lose all of its kinetic properties.
You'd think this would just be possible since it's all sticky.
But just feel some sand from different brands, you immediately feel that there is a big difference in the hardness and degree of stickiness.
This is because different brands have their own formula, each with different substances or a different mix of substances.
When you mix one species with another you will unbalance this formula, causing the sand to lose some or all of its kinetic properties.
And that's a shame!
Conclusion
So you see, it is magical and wonderful material, but you should still try to avoid mixing your sand.
Before you know it you can no longer play with it and to then use it as normal sand it is very expensive!
