Hoverboards, also known as self-balancing scooters, offer a fun way to get from place to place. You just need a little practice!

You don't want to be unprepared for you hoverboard to jump. Before you start moving, make sure you have the necessary safety equipment.

We've made a list for you with all the recommended items as well as helpful tips to help you ride your hoverboard.

Do I need to wear protection while driving?

You are of course free in this choice, but it is certainly recommended to wear protection! Especially if riding a hoverboard is a completely new activity, this is a wise choice.

The following items are recommended:

  • Helmet
  • Wrist guards
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow protectors

If you wrap yourself up well you can prevent a lot of injury. Keep in mind that most of these devices are capable of 10 up to 20 kilometers per hour to go.

While these aren't very impressive speeds for a auto, that can of course be dangerous on a hoverboard. It is important that you wear gear to keep all your body parts protected.

Once you're all set, get on your hoverboard and get ready for the next step!

How should you ride a Hoverboard?

Now you are ready to actually start driving. put you hoverboard down and observe the following steps:

  1. Place your hoverboard on a flat surface directly in front of you.
  2. Step on it hoverboard with one foot (whichever is most comfortable for you).
  3. Make sure the board is flat. It can be tricky to step on because the board will start to move as soon as it senses pressure.
  4. Stand on the board with the other foot.
  5. Try to place your feet as far apart as possible. This attitude gives you the most control.

Stand up straight and look ahead. At first you will probably feel a little uncomfortable and possibly even tense. While that's understandable, we really recommend trying to relax and focus on standing as normally as possible.

The next step is to get you moving. This requires leaning or gentle shifts of the weight by twisting your ankle up and down.

Pay attention when you start on your hoverboard. While leaning is necessary for movement, you only want to make small shifts in your weight. If you lean too far, you can and will fall off your plate.

Here are a few tips for getting around smoothly:

  1. Moving forward and backward: lean forward. Do not bend at the waist. The movement will usually be in your ankles.
  2. Turn: To turn your hoverboard, push your toes forward.
  3. To go left, push your toes down.
  4. To move to the right, push your toes down.

The further you push down, the sharper you will turn. For sharper turns, you can even push the toes down on one foot, while simultaneously pushing down the heel of the other foot. With enough practice, you can eventually use this technique to spin in a circle.

When you are done moving forward and turning, it is time to go through the steps of dismounting:

  1. Shift your weight to your dominant foot.
  2. Get off with your other foot.
  3. Running don't get off your hoverboard.

Many boarders find that the hardest part of learning to ride a hoverboard is the process of getting on and off. Keep practicing, this might be the only part with your board that you can practice indoors† Encourage yourself to get on and off calmly as if you were a trap goes up or down.
