Overall rating
It contains 270 pieces, with which you can build all kinds of houses and still have some left over. Much larger pieces are also included, so you really get your money's worth. E
There are many building blocks here that you can use for all sorts of things, and also a few larger base plates. Different themes and colors are available.
The instructions are very, very easy to follow, with a few simple building steps. You even have some doors, that's pretty cool, with a castle theme. You have a real castle door.
You can also build an igloo. And you have a sturdy stone house with a skylight above and a small door. As you can see, you can build all of these houses from the examples and still have a lot left over to do additional things.

One of the cool things here is that all of these building blocks are really usable for any kind of home. A disadvantage is that these houses are too small for real Lego dolls to live in. So this is a really good first set to start building Lego with, but it's not a complete Lego city. You might have to build a bigger house for that. So I think this is a good starter set to introduce your child to building Lego houses, and then you can expand and later use these bricks as the basic building blocks everyone needs.
It is marked for ages 4 and up, but that's more because of the small pieces and the risk of them putting them in their mouths than because of the build itself, as the examples are very, very easy to build. So if you're looking at Lego and want to buy a first set, this is one of the easiest ones to make. They're normal Lego bricks, not Duplo, but I do understand the confusion, as it's in the same age group. I think if you want to make them move from Duplo to the first Lego set, this could be the way to go.
The doors and windows snap into place and won't open, though the small drawbridge does open, albeit vertically.
So it's not a full door and the windows can't open. Plus, it's too small for Lego figures to fit through.

There are also no Lego figures with this set. But I think you can use these bricks for all sorts of things when you're building your city.
Overall, the Lego Bricks and Houses building set is a great starter set for kids interested in building with Lego. With 270 pieces you get a lot of possibilities to build different houses, and there are still enough bricks left over for other creative projects. Although the houses are too small for Lego figures to live in, the building blocks are versatile and can be used for all kinds of constructions. It's a simple set to start with and can serve as a basic building set for further Lego adventures. Please note the age recommendation from 4 years due to the small parts. So if you're looking for a first Lego set, this is definitely a good choice to consider.
